Some Familiar And Others Hidden: An Explorer’s Guide To Hong Kong

This sponsored story was originally published on Travelog.me

For most travellers, taking in the view from The Peak, eating copious amounts of dim sum and bar-hopping in Lan Kwai Fong would easily classify as a perfect Hong Kong vacation. But, we say get out there and explore this city’s undiscovered beauty and marvel at how the locals live. Here’s our mix of Hong Kong’s mainstream hotspots and hidden gems, helping you to make the most of this magnificent city’s many quirks.

Shopaholics Unite

SOGO

If you’re a self-proclaimed fashionista or shopaholic, you’re going to love department store SOGO, which has two different branches. For the latest electronics, trendy fashion, a spa treatment or even groceries – you’ll find it all on one of SOGO Causeway Bay’s 16 floors. Word of advice: this location is HECTIC so be prepared! If leisurely shopping is more your thing, you’ll definitely appreciate the Tsim Tsa Tsui location. With fewer crowds, you’ll enjoy the peace and quiet while calmly taking your time choosing exactly what to buy.

Hipster 9

Does your heart beat for vintage fashion or those original one-off decorative items for your home? If yes, Hipster 9 is just the place for you. With a mustard yellow shop front, there is no way on Earth that you’ll miss this beloved store in Sheung Wan. The tiny shop is a treasure trove of goodness – always full of surprises. Psst – we’ve heard of people hunting down a stunning pair of Burberry earrings from the 80s and some Ferragamo kitten heels from the 60s.

Meet Us Here Foodies

Sky Lounge

What’s a visit to Hong Kong without marvelling at its gorgeous skyline with a drink in hand? The Sky Lounge is the perfect place to do just this, as it sits on the 18th floor of the Sheraton Hotel. With a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour and a modern interior, coupled with dim lighting, you’ll surely be in for a romantic night. Wine connoisseurs will be delighted by the lounge’s award-winning wine and spirit collection, while cocktail lovers will undoubtedly fall for their mixes themed around iconic Hong Kong landmarks.

Insider tip: Aside from the uninterrupted views of the harbour, the Sky Lounge offers the perfect vantage point to enjoy the nightly Symphony of Lights show.

Sing Heung Yuen

If you’re after a “literal” taste of local life, sit down at a Dai Pai Dong (an open-air food stall) and eat elbow-to-elbow with a Hong Konger. One of our favourite spots is Sing Heung Yuen, where you’ll find the majority of diners slurping down a big bowl of instant noodles in tomato broth with beef. This local classic is a heart stealer with its thick, tangy broth and finely chopped beef pieces.

Shanghai St is one of Hong Kong’s oldest streets and many of its buildings and shop fronts still retain their old Chinese façade. Venture into the street with camera in hand and capture what remains as that nostalgic version of Hong Kong you love from those old school Jackie Chan movies. If you fancy yourself the next Masterchef, you’ll absolutely love this street too. Each turn is a store selling everything from bamboo steamers, Chinese-style wooden chopping boards and even baking utensils.

Star Street

The Star Street Precinct situated right between Admiralty and Wan Chai is where all the hipsters will tell you to go. Littered with an eclectic mix of vibing cafes, lifestyle boutiques, bars, street art, and galleries, you could easily lose yourself wandering through the many nooks and crannies of this creative street.
